Language in English Civil War Title Pages

[King Charles]

A COLLABORATION Wrought by the Persons:

About Our Project

The English Civil War took place from 1642-1651. Our project involves looking at the title pages of propaganda produced between 1642 and 1649, then encoding it into XML in order to examine the documents.

Research Questions

We've chosen to investigate the ways authors used to market their ideas to the public, like word choice and style. Word choice for us involves looking at whether a publication uses, for example, "liberty," "tyrant," "loyalty," and other "keywords" in their title page, and to what effect. We hope to discover a connection between the word choice used and the political leaning of a publisher/author; for example, Monarchists use "liberty" more often while rebels tend to use "tyrant," and whether these words ever appear on the same page.
